The Wild West rises from the dead each Halloween in Southwest Montana
Southwest Montana is chock-full of historical and often spooky locations and notorious characters that give its mountains, rivers and communities a colorful past. In several of southwestern Montana’s legendary mining communities, the Wild West rises from the dead, and October events can be frightful fun for the family…especially in the well-preserved communities of Nevada City and abandoned Bannack.
Nevada City’s living history museum is alive and well during the autumn season and offers gypsy fortune tellers, face painting, ghost walks and safe trick-or-treating during All Hallows Eve. Don’t miss a stop at the “haunted” Fairweather Inn in nearby Virginia City; many a ghost have supposedly been spied running up and down the historic hallways.
Bannack, which happens to be Montana’s first capital city and is now a state park dedicated to the ghost town, comes alive at the end of October with the ghosts of its storied past. Bannack Ghost Walks recreate significant events in history and introduce visitors to the spirits of notorious former (and current???) residents, such as Henry Plummer, Mattie Silks, Doctor Glick and more. Bring a flashlight, warm clothes and the family for an evening of ghostly adventure.
